In 1975, he was named to the All-Far-West team later in his senior year. He finished his UCLA career as the school’s 11th all-time assist leader.

He began coaching for Bishop Montgomery High School in 1975, and later formed the South Bay Vikings team. He served as an assistant coach at UCLA under Steve Gay from 1977 to 1979. After Gay left in 1980, he was named head coach. Coach of the Year was awarded to him by Soccer America magazine in 1984. Until 1999, he was the head coach at UCLA.
After that, he became the head coach of Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Galaxy in 1999, a role he held until 2004. He finished his career with the Los Angeles Galaxy with a 79–53–32 overall record and a 16–7–3 playoff record. He was named the first coach of Seattle Sounders FC in 2009. Similarly, he left the club in 2016, when he was replaced by assistant coach Brian, and went on to work as a studio analyst for ESPN.
